Our backyards tend to be forgotten treasures. We don’t all know how to maximize the use of our outdoor space. Whether you have just moved into your new home or you are looking for ways to spruce up your backyard, we have some suggestions.
Gas Grill $300
We don’t have to wait for a sunny day to get out the grill. Cooking on an outdoor grill gives food a unique taste that you can’t get from other methods of cooking. And there is so much more you can do than plain hamburgers! The Char-Broil Performance 300 is an excellent gas grill and it even costs less than $300! There is a 15.6” x 18.5” porcelain-coated cast iron grate for cooking, a small tray to keep the food warm and two fold-down metal tables. The propane tank fits nicely into a cabinet, so the whole unit looks tidy. There are four wheels to easily move the grill around. All you need to do it push the ignition button to fire up the grill and you can keep an eye on the temperature with the gauge in the lid!
Darts is a great game for a bit of friendly competition or family fun. For some people, the backyard is the best place to play the game. So you need an outdoor dart board. There are a few different types of board, plastic, magnetic and the traditional bristle board. Plastic is a great option if you are going to leave the board out in the rain but it’s best not to leave it in direct sunlight if you get high temperatures. Magnetic is perfect for children because it is nice and safe. If you prefer a traditional dartboard you will need one with a plastic cover or cabinet. Viper is a well-known dartboard brand. The Viper Hideaway Cabinet is great value for money with two games in one, flip the board and you can play baseball darts. Inside the cabinet, you will find chalk scoreboards. It’s super thin (just 2.1”) and it is easy to install.
There is no better way to cool down on a hot day than with an outdoor pool. Backyard pools have improved leaps and bounds over the years. Intex is one of the most popular brands of inflatable and metal frame pools. They have lots of different shapes and sizes so you may not need as much space as you think, or as much money! The 8ft round pool has an inflatable rim. Once blown up, fill up with water and you are ready to go. If you want something a little sturdier, they have a 12ft Prism steel frame. Neither of these has a filter system, so it is worth buying a cover to go over it. Sometimes you are better off spending a little extra (even just $20-$30) to get a filter system with the pool. This 10ft metal frame pool comes with a filter. All of these options can be packed away, ready for next summer.
This might seem a little trivial compared with a grill and a pool, but solar lights are ideal to add atmosphere to your backyard. And before you ask, yes, they really do work! You could choose between spotlights, fairy lights, wall lights, or path lights. There are sets of colored lights too. If you have steps in your garden, a set of solar lights can light them up to make them a lot safer. Motion sensor solar lights are excellent if you are worried about security. This one will light up 200 square feet. If you want to light up a path this pack of 16 Sursun outdoor lights is less than $30 and you don’t need to install them, just push them into the ground! Flowers, butterflies, and mushrooms seem to be the most popular decorations but you can find more decorative solar lights here.
We love herb gardens! Herbs are easy to grow so you don’t have to worry if you aren’t the best gardener. There is also a huge range of styles and designs so it doesn’t matter if your backyard is a huge or just a small patio. For small spaces, you can use the Meiwo vertical garden. It is made of felt cloth and has 7 pockets. It is also really cheap so if you are doubting your gardening abilities you won’t be investing too much. At the other end of the scale is the VegTrug planter pocket. It is made of wood and you will have to assemble it but the main advantage is the height, so you won’t have to bend down!
It’s a necessary evil- the laundry! While many are tempted to use a clothes dryer, nothing beats clothes dried in the fresh air! Not to mention the benefits for the environment and your electricity bill! The problem is, traditional clotheslines are so big and ugly! Although retractable clotheslines require some installation, they take up next to no space and they don’t affect the appearance of your backyard. BESy has a 9.2ft retractable line that fits inside a small stainless steel case. It even comes with the necessary screwdriver. While not as attractive, the 7Penn line is 40ft, ideal for families.
